When Jesus appeared to Saul on the road to Damascus, He sent the future apostle on a journey to the Jews and the Gentiles “to open their eyes and to turn [convert] them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God” (Acts 26:17-18). This road on which Saul was to embark began in Genesis with Abel’s conversion and extended throughout the pages of God’s Word to the conversion of the Jews at Rome.
The Bible tells of many people who had been converted to righteousness, but the Holy Spirit chose to reveal the conversion experiences of only a few of them. It is the conversion experiences of these few that are examined in this book. By examining these conversions, it will become clear how people became righteous in biblical times and how a person can turn from darkness to light and become a child of God today.

After many years of preaching and teaching that salvation was by calling on the name of the Lord, Oran H. Heuck began to question whether he was preaching the truth. He had been so busy trying to evangelize people that he had neglected to observe if there were visible indications of salvation in the lives of those who had prayed. When he recounted the many children, teens, and adults who had prayed to the Lord, he was shocked to realize that very few, if any, had shown visible indications of regeneration. He wondered, “What is the problem? Have I been wrong? Have these “converts” truly been born again by the Holy Spirit? Maybe salvation is simply by believing in Jesus, and not by praying for forgiveness.”
.
As a result of these questions, he conducted an extensive Biblical research project to determine how people were converted in the Scriptures. In his studies, he analyzed every conversion experience recorded by the Holy Spirit in the Bible. It was discovered that people were converted only by believing, and never by praying, or performing any other “spiritual act”. The results of this investigation are presented in fifty-eight devotional-style chapters in Amazing Bible Conversions.
John 1:14-39; 2:11-12; 6:67-69
The proof of John’s conversion is that he believed Jesus was the Messiah.
When Jesus returned after being tempted by the devil in the wilderness for forty days, the first person to recognize Him was John the Baptist. He proclaimed, as Jesus walked by, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” Two of John’s disciples, Andrew and John, were standing with the Baptist, and upon hearing that Jesus was the Lamb of God, followed Him and dwelt with Him the rest of that day. After spending time with Jesus, Andrew was confident that Jesus was the Messiah. Quickly finding his brother, Simon, and speaking on behalf of both John and himself, he enthusiastically declared, “We have found the Messiah!” (John 1:35-41).
John’s belief that Jesus was the Messiah is proof of his conversion. John himself wrote later, “These are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you might have life through His name” (John 20:31).
Additional proof of John’s conversion is that he believed on Jesus. When Jesus manifested His glory by transforming water into grape juice at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, John and the other disciples “believed on Him” (John 2:11).
Further proof of John’s conversion is that he believed Jesus is the Son of God. When Jesus asked the disciples if they were also going to leave Him, Peter, boldly answering in behalf of them all, said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we believe and are sure that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:67-69).
Since the apostle John had been a disciple of John the Baptist, his initial source of truth about Jesus was John the Baptist’s preaching regarding Jesus, which he recorded in his gospel.
Some of John the Baptist’s statements were:
“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for He was before me'” (John 1:29-30).
“I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it stayed upon Him. And I knew Him not, but He who sent me to baptize with water, the same said to me, ‘On whom you shall see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, the same is He who baptizes [immerses] with the Holy Spirit'” (John 1:32-33).
“And I [John the Baptist] saw and bore record that this is the Son of God” (John 1:34).
John’s second source of truth about Jesus was his personal contact with Jesus. When he and Andrew had heard John the Baptist proclaim, “Behold, the Lamb of God,” they had promptly followed Jesus and spent the rest of that day with Him. John was so impressed with Jesus that he immediately became His disciple. He wrote later, “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
Another source of truth for John about Jesus was the prophetic statements by Moses and the other prophets regarding the coming of the Messiah. Philip revealed that John, Andrew, Peter, and himself believed the Old Testament prophets when he said to Nathaniel, “We have found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and [also] the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” (John 1:45). Undoubtedly, Jesus had explained to His new disciples that He was the Messiah whose coming was predicted by Moses in Deuteronomy 18.
Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, when He transformed over 100 gallons of water into superior-flavored, fresh-pressed grape juice, was an additional source of truth. John recorded, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth His glory, and His disciples believed on Him” (John 2:11).
John was converted when he believed Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God (John 20:31).
Because of John the Baptist’s testimony that Jesus was the Son of God, his personal contact with Jesus, and Moses’ prediction of the coming Messiah, John believed in Jesus. Not only did he believe that Jesus was the Messiah (the Christ), the Son of God manifested in human flesh, but he also believed that Jesus was the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
John’s act of faith, revealing the genuineness of his conversion, was that he became a disciple of Jesus and followed Him. John recorded, “After this [the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee] He [Jesus] went down to Capernaum, He, and His mother, and His brethren and His disciples [one of whom was John]” (John 2:12).
AMAZING BIBLE CONVERSIONS could be considered a research paper summarizing the results of an extensive research project in which every conversion experience recorded in the Word of God was carefully analyzed. The result of the research revealed that conversion was always by faith alone. It was discovered that, in every case, a person was converted only by what he believed without performing any spiritual act such as praying, confessing one’s sins, or calling on the name of the Lord. The research revealed that in every conversion the emphasis was always on who God or Christ was, not on man’s lost condition and need of salvation.
In biblical times, regeneration was the result of believing:
However, since God no longer speaks directly to individuals, or through prophets or apostles, today people are converted only by believing the Scriptures.
Based primarily on what was observed in this research project, it is suggested that many Old Testament prophecies about Christ, plus many facts about Him, be included in evangelistic Bible studies or sermons.
(For a list of these suggested verses explaining “Who Is Jesus,” please see PDF download “Who Is Jesus”.)
These two important concepts should also be considered to be added to any evangelistic presentation:
Since salvation is only through believing in Jesus Christ, it is necessary to continue presenting the truth about Jesus until a person believes. Alternate between a variety of verses when teaching about Christ because the devil will attempt to prevent a person from understanding and believing God’s Word. Jesus stated in His parable of the sower: “Now the parable is this: The seed is the Word of God. Those by the wayside are they who hear; then comes the devil, and takes away the Word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved ” (Luke 8:11-12). Therefore, since the devil will attempt to remove the Word from a person’s heart, the Word of God must be continually presented until a person finally understands and believes it.
Scriptures dealing with the resurrection of Jesus Christ should be the main verses quoted and studied. That God raised Jesus from the dead must be believed to be converted. Without the belief in the resurrection of Jesus, a person cannot be saved. That the resurrection of Jesus is the primary doctrine in the New Testament is shown by the fact that at least 255 verses in fifty-three Scripture portions in seventeen books refer to Jesus’ resurrection. This is many more references to Jesus’ resurrection than any other doctrine.
Also, since conversion results only from believing the truth about God and Jesus, it is a good procedure when studying a particular portion of the Scriptures to first determine what is stated regarding God and Jesus.
Do not become impatient while waiting for the Holy Spirit to produce faith in a person’s heart. Do not take matters into your own hands and encourage a person to pray the sinner’s prayer. It will not work! It will only produce a false assurance of salvation. There are not two ways of salvation. Salvation is only by believing God’s Word.
Since salvation is only by believing the Word of God, it is necessary to actually read or quote the Scriptures, and not to just paraphrase God’s Word. Salvation is by believing what God has said, not by believing what a person, church, or doctrinal statement said God said. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).
Some evidences of conversion through faith in Christ are as follows:
It is often difficult to determine if a child has been converted by believing in Jesus. Therefore, it is important that parents persistently present to their children Bible verses regarding who Jesus is even though a child may profess faith in Christ. Parents should avoid encouraging their children to make any sort of salvation decision. Since a child can only be saved by believing in Jesus, any action as praying to the Lord for salvation will result in giving the child and his parents a false sense of his salvation and lead to a cessation of evangelistic activity. This author is personally aware of many, many children and adults who prayed to receive Christ as their Savior, who, as time progressed, revealed no sign of regeneration.
The assurance of a person’s salvation should be based on the fact that he presently is believing in Jesus, and not on some prayer or action performed in the past.
Regeneration does not occur automatically by doing steps one, two, and three, and presto! Salvation! Salvation results only from hearing the Word of God, and then believing it because of the Holy Spirit’s working in a person’s heart.
In science, the scientific method uses a series of tests to determine if a hypothesis is valid. A hypothesis is an educated guess that attempts to explain why a particular phenomenon occurs. When the scientific method is used to determine the validity of the hypothesis that conversion results when a person confesses his sin and calls on Jesus to save him, it is revealed that this hypothesis is false. For a hypothesis to become a theory, it must always produce the expected results when tested. The reason the hypothesis that a person is saved by calling on the name of the Lord has been accepted as being valid by many people is that they have not tested it.
The procedure for testing the validity of the hypothesis that conversion is a result of calling on the Lord is simple. You can do the testing yourself. When you are aware of someone who has made a spiritual decision, record that person’s name and the date of the decision, and then observe what happens. If the seed of the Word of God has been planted in the person’s heart, it will bear fruit. With adults, conversion should bring an immediate, noticeable change. If, however, no spiritual fruit is produced after years of waiting, your testing will have proved that the hypothesis is false. Over the years, this author has known many, many individuals who, when the validity of their decision was tested, failed the test.
With children, however, the testing period is much longer than that required for adults. To determine whether a child was converted when he made a spiritual decision, one must wait until that child is no longer under his parents’ jurisdiction and is making his own decisions. This author is aware of many children from Christian homes (some who even graduated from a conservative, Christian university) who, when grown, revealed by their actions and words that they had never been converted.
Although a child may make even several false professions, it is hoped that eventually he will come to believe the truth about Jesus and thereby be converted. When this happens, the testing will appear positive because, since he did believe and was converted, when he becomes an adult, he will reveal the fruits of salvation. Because of this, many adults who made an empty salvation decision as a child, but who were inwardly and quietly converted later when they finally believed the truth about Jesus, probably incorrectly concluded that their childhood decision was what saved them.
A very public testimony that calling on the Lord does not produce conversion is the occasional re-baptism, usually of a teenager. Often the person being re-immersed will state that even though he had made a decision in the past, he now realizes he was not saved when he was previously baptized.
Immediately upon being converted by believing in Jesus Christ, God applies the blood of Jesus to the new convert, cleansing him from his sin. Although Christ died for the sins of the whole world, his death is only applicable to those who believe in Him. God automatically applies Christ’s death to the new convert when he believes.
Romans 3:26 – He [God] might be just, and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus.
